Low key...my momma chose my friends. Way back in ’87 when brown girls wore jheri curls. My mom, being the genius she is, found parents she liked, could trust, and made nice. Her first target...Ms. Monica. She knew before I could ever imagine that Monica’s daughter, Eboni, was good bestie material. They both organized play dates that helped build a foundation for a friendship that lasted through elementary school, high school, and even college (same major)!! And what’s more awesome? The bond they created has helped her extended family become my family too!
Momma did the same thing with Ms. Alfreda. Even though at least 10 other kids lived along the same route as her daughter, Nikki (not to mention she was a mile out of the way). She chose her to add to our carpool, picking up and dropping off without ever complaining. Momma and Alfreda showed Nikki and I that, for a friend, you go the extra mile (literally and figuratively).
It was the same with Tahlee and Ryan!! In high school, I met tons of girls, which was very easy(it was an all-girls Catholic high school). But the only houses I could go over, spend the night, and vice versa was Tahlee and Ryan. We even went on vacations together! Still to this very day, my mom maintains constant relationships with Ms. Theda (Tahlee) and Ms. Dianne (Ryan) complete with lunch dates and shopping excursions.
These mothers gave their blood, sweat, and tears to shape each of us. Gently guiding us in creating the ultimate dream team of besties. Not because we are so fabulous, but because they are. Our mommas knew then, what I’ve grown to learn, you should be very intentional in selecting an inner circle. What’s more? They continue to support us, being present at weddings & baby showers, and even keeping the little ones when time permits. They are all our moms, ever loving and engaged in each of our lives. And THAT has made all the difference.
I will be eternally grateful to my mom for many things, and one is choosing my friends. In guiding me to them, she continues to enrich my life with love and support. Sustaining these relationships has brought me great joy. Each of them, in their own way, has enhanced my life, and mom did that. So, thank you Mom, you’ve got great taste!
Happy Mothers Day to my moms: Ms. Audrey, Ms. Monica, Ms. Alfreda, Ms. Theda, and Ms. Dianne. Thank you for taking me in as your own. You each have been such a blessing to me…to all of us! I love you!
