The “Freshman Fifteen”. You may know this as the fifteen pounds every college freshman inevitably gains their first year of college because of the perfect storm of late night eating, limited exercise, and a slowing metabolism. These unsuspecting victims come home for Thanksgiving looking like the dinner turkey. Similarly, there is the unstated rule that dating and a little bit of happy equals a lot a bit of weight. Welp! This long-time single (newly-dating) girl rebukes this thought... well, I should say rebukED this idea. A recent trip to the dreaded scale had my use-to-be fit ass like...
Did you know we are scientifically prone to gain weight when happy and dating...well, I sure didn’t!! Like the universe refuses to allow me to be great and be in a relationship at the same damn time! Really universe?!?!? Your body continuously releases a chemical called dopamine as a result of rewarding experiences such as food or soft kisses, neck nibbles... (You get the idea). This chemical has a direct connection to addiction...so you feel it, and you want to keep feeling it! Consequently, the honeymoon phase of a relationship often causes couples to move less, and (blank) more...you fill in the blank. I would have said EAT...but whose mind is in the gutter (Ooh! I’m telling!)!?!?! Not to mention, eating is an often and necessary component of a date...well, any date with me! And all those flattering compliments from Bae affirming how fine the rings of Saturn forming around your waist are, and how cute you looked devouring that fourth piece of pizza doesn’t help.
But, knowing is everything!
New goal: keep the love...lose the love handles!
Get Yo’ Steps Up. Instead of dinner and a movie, go to the museum or on a walk by the waterfront. Active dates like this get the blood flowing, and spark tons of conversation topics. You will lower the rate of weight gain, and might even avoid being a sweaty mess at the end. In other words, it makes your heart happy (literally and figuratively).
Get Cookin’...Good Lookin’. If you’re staying in, cook...together! Cooking in is a great way to bond as a couple, and control your food intake. You save money (eating out can be crazy expensive), and decrease your caloric intake drastically. Squeeze in some kisses for good measure!!
There isn’t an I in TEAM...but there should be. Don’t forget about yourself! While #BAEdays are nice, don’t forget about your personal goals and commitments. Keep those solo gym dates and partner workouts. It is so important. Bae will understand! The confident curvaceously fit girl is what caught their eye in the first place, so work out now and boo-up later!
It Takes Two to Make a Thing Go Right. So, when Ryan (The Pretty Plate) started dating her forever-BOO (a.k.a. FEYONCÉ) Terrance, their first dates were workouts. They would meet up and work out together. It was a great way for them to get to know each other, build trust, friendship, and break a sweat (Read my post on Partner Workouts to get those ideas going!). All those calories burned have ultimately led them down the aisle to a couple of FOREVER! #BlackLoveMattersSo, for your next date meet at the gym instead of the bar!
What other ways do you keep the HAPPY weight off?
Love without FEAR,
