“Words have power. Words begin and end wars. They create and destroy families. They break hearts. They heal them. If you have the right words, there's nothin on earth you can't do.”
- Lori Handeland
Words. The one tool every single person possesses. They can be used to create or destroy. Words carry energy. They can determine our own destiny and the fate of the relationships around us. In a very real sense, life and death are in the power of the tongue. Lately, I have been examining my relationships, both professional and personal. I have noticed how I impact those relationships, negatively and positively, just by my word choice and tone. Additionally, I have been a lot more mindful of what I say about myself. The Universe is listening, y’all! When the words you put out in the universe come to pass…shit really gets real! I have a much more appreciation for the power of words. I now understand that I can use my words to get the life I want.
Not sure if you’re familiar with The Secret. It was a 2006 book and film about the laws of attraction. It states that we are responsible for the life we have and live. Where you are in your life (whether it be good or bad) is the direct likeness of the energy, thoughts, and feelings you put into the Universe. In this way, you can create the life you want solely by thinking and believing you can have it. I’d like to take this concept up a half step. Speaking the reality we want creates the life we want! Words are the vehicle to our desired destination.
Recently, I was shooting around the idea of this post with my lovely mom. I was telling her about how amazed I was at how the Universe honors my words. She told me a story about before she purchased her home. We lived in an apartment for my entire life prior to her purchasing her first home the year I graduated from college. She talked about how she would come into the area she now lives, and would say “I am going to live in this neighborhood.” She would tell friends and family that not only was she going to live there, but in a Georgian house. Over and over again, she professed that life she wanted before she even had the means to make it a reality. Slowly but surely, her words began to shape her future. She got that Georgian house in that neighborhood, by the way!
Now, no one is saying that it is easy. Lord knows that I have damaged relationships and my own self-worth because I carelessly tossed around hurtful and lifeless words. Instead of speaking the life I want, I state the life I have. Instead of narrating my future, I restate my present. Thinking, I was just “keeping it real”, my words created a sad and lonely world that I don't want. Sometimes it’s easier to be petty and bitter. Sometimes that trauma of life is so dark that you can’t see light. And to be clear, it is still a problem I deal with daily. But in those moments I've found that “keeping it real” didn’t grow me. I was no further in the outcome I wanted. If anything, I went backwards.
Here are a few things I am a lot more mindful of:
Everything starts with a grateful heart. Think of the blessings you already have. And don't we have such an abundance of blessings?? We are truly favored. Focus on the good. Begin your day, your thoughts, with gratitude (click the link to read more about gratitude) for things you have. This literally shifts your energy, and puts you in the perfect position to be impactful with your words.
Decide. In the words of the incredible Dr. Ollie Watts Davis of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the hardest thing you will ever have to do in life is make a decision. By simply deciding the life you want, you are committing you energy and words to that life. You are setting in motion the journey to accomplishing your goals. Nike would say, “just do it.”
Fake it. Although your mind is an organ, it behaves like a muscle. It can be trained to improve or change cognitive functions. When self-doubt and fear creep in (and it will), develop some affirmations to combat it. Affirmations are great y’all! They are powerful words! You may not even believe what you’re saying, but in continuing to say them, your mind will slowly catch up with your heart!
Words can push you to your place of greatness. Use them to create the life you want. Know that the Universe will respond to your thoughts, feelings, and words, so choose them wisely!
