Growing up “Blackish”, having a big butt, appreciating a big butt, or wanting a big butt was nothing new. I grew up knowing that having a nice, round, beautiful butt was highly looked upon and pretty dope! My mama, cousins, aunties, and friends all had them. Songs like "Doin the Butt", "Baby Got Back", "Back Dat Ass Up", "Ms. Fat Booty", "Bootylicous" and "Bonita Applebum" all praised a rotund derrière! Today having a big ole "donkey" is on trend and everybody wants one. For those of us who weren’t born with a “donk” like Serena or have the luxury of paying for perfectly sculpted "buns" like the Kardashians, we have to put in a little work.
I have to admit, I have become a bit obsessed with my "boo-tay" (glutes), not because it’s on trend or anything like that. See, I actually had a bigger butt… what happen to it you ask? When I started to drop weight for my body building competition, not only did my waist get smaller but my ASS did too! Who knew…I mean I didn’t consciously sign up for that part of #preplife. Anyway, I have been on a relentless mission to get it back!
The glutes are an amazing muscle group, one of the largest on the body. It helps your body stay upright, enables you to power through workouts, and looks fantastic when squeezed into a pair of skinny jeans. I’m just sayin'. We use our glutes all the time, so it’s important that we work them out on the regular. Our glutes are loaded with muscles that are capable of growing LARGER, so we have to work the HELL out of them! I mean, if you want to score that curvy butt of your dreams, you will.
Here are a few of my go to Booty Boosting exercises:
- Squats – My go to! 4 sets of 20
- Weighted lunges – 4 sets of 20
- Hip Thrusters – Engages both hamstrings (they hold up your butt) and glutes
- Dead lifts – Another one of my favs… but make sure your form is correct. You don’t want to hurt your lower back.
- Donkey Kicks – Don’t underestimate this exercise. You will feel that burn.
- Frog Hops – Fire on the quads
My Booty Boosting days are far from over. There really is a science to it and I still have a long way to go to get my glutes just the way that I want them . Ill be increasing my leg days to 3 days a week and continue to research new glute workouts to add to my routine. So ladies, no more cardio until you are blue in the face, you won't build a great bum unless you do some weight training.
