We have been so lucky this winter season, but don't let this mild winter fool you! Now is the time to ensure you are taking good care of your skin this season. Here are my the top 3 do's and don'ts for your winter skin this year.
Do increase hydration/moisturizing: If you find that your face and body starts getting dryer in the cooler months, this is completely normal. Going from the dry heat in your home to the brisk wind outside is brutal on the skin. Try using a humidifier at night. This will add a bit of moisture to the air. As for your moisturizer and lotions, switch to a thicker face cream and add an oil to body lotion to protect the skin from the elements.
Do exfoliate: Exfoliation helps with blood circulation and softens skin by removing dry or dead skin. Use a body brush or even make your own sugar scrub to exfoliate your body and bring forth your softer side!
Do drink more water: 70% of our body is water. Drinking it helps withflushing toxins as well as hydrating the body, so drink up! Your body will thank you. Hydrating from the outside in is helpful, but Hydrating from the inside out is the most effective!
And now, the DON'Ts!
Don't shower/bathe too long: Hot water and long showers/baths break down the lipid barrier that protects the skin. Shorten your time in the shower and opt for a luke warm temperature.
Don't skip SPF: Just because we spend less time outside in the winter months doesn't mean we should stop using sunscreen. The sun also reflects off of snow and at times can be more dangerous! Be sure to add SPF to your skin care routine or select a face/hand cream that has SPF.
Don't stress: With my work/travel schedule, it is tough to get my proper rest and relaxation. This has definitely been the cause of stressful breakouts in the past. Now, when I travel, I pack a mini essential oil diffuser with lavender for calming at night. This along with an evening stretch and meditation does the trick every time!
