Hey Besties! Let me introduce you to my homie Jess (IG: @jess_a_glimpse). She is one of my dearest friends who is constantly slaying the style game! Check out this interview I did with her focused on her fashion sense.
So tell me when did you fall in love with fashion?
I fell in love with fashion my freshman year of college when I realized I had no fashion sense. Growing up a catholic school girl and athlete, the first 18 years of my life kept me in uniforms. I even worked at Lady Foot Locker in high school and we all know what those uniforms look like. In college, I realized my wardrobe was limited and lacked any personality because I had not yet developed a sense of style. But with the help of my college friends who had a head start on me, I quickly took note and eventually caught up to them discovering and creating my look which of course continues to evolve today.
How would you describe your style in 5 words?
You would think this is any easy question for me, but I honestly struggle with this question mainly because I don’t like to limit myself to a particular style category. I guess 5 words gives me some flexibility, right? So I would say on any given day one of the following 5 words would most likely describe my look: Sophisticated, sexy, trendy, sporty, classic.
Who or what influences your style choices?
Sometimes I just wake up with an idea or a look I've envisioned in my head, other times during my less creative moments, I let the weather, my mood or the occasion dress me. Often times my style choices come together by accident, which are the times I love most because it keeps me creative and thinking outside the box.
For example, I will have a particular look in mind that I want to create, but you know how it goes when you're in a hurry and can never find that particular belt or necklace you want to wear, or you're missing the mate to the pair of shoes you need to set the look off, or that article of clothing you need for the base of your look is deep deep DEEP in your dirty laundry and you are forced to pick random accessories and shoe options just to see what could work. 95% percent of the times this happens, the improvisation ends up creating an even better look than the one I was initially trying to create.
What is your go to store or boutique for a bomb outfit?
I will internet surf for hours looking for the perfect outfit and discover the most random online boutiques. However, if I had to choose one store as a solid go-to it would be Akira. They have everything you need to create a dope affordable look.
If you could dress someone for a red carpet slay, who would you dress and why?
It’s a toss up between Nicki Minaj and Tiffany Haddish, but I will go with Nicki Minaj since she’s been in the game a bit longer...It’s time to revamp her look. I like to see celebrities evolve their style and reinvent themselves over time and it’s taking Nicki a little too long.
What advice would you give someone trying to define their personal style?
Some tips I would give someone looking to define their personal style would be:
Dress according to your personality. When you do this, your style is less forced and it exudes a subtle confidence which is very appealing because it’s authentically YOU.
Invest in some fly and versatile statement pieces. A statement piece ties the whole look together and is usually the focal point of the entire look. Whether it’s a dope jacket, a piece of jewelry, hat, bag, or shoes, a statement piece can elevate your look to another level.
Every trend isn’t for everybody. Be careful about jumping on the trendy bandwagon. Trends typically only last a season or 2 and if you’re anything like me, you’ve spent half the first season trying to determine if this is really something you would wear or if you like it because it’s being fed to you everywhere you turn almost like that one song playing in heavy rotation on the radio.
Labels aren’t Bible. Now don’t get me wrong, I love powerhouse fashion brands, I just can’t rationalize paying the cost of my mortgage for a shoe or bag. It’s just not in me. I find it much more rewarding discovering a no named brand or boutique with unique finds where I’m almost certain I won’t end up on the “Who wore it better?” list.
