Chicago is truly a magical city. Autumn in Chicago is by far my favorite time of year! I’m going to reminisce right now… so bear with me. Right now I’m thinking about strolling through Hyde Park, taking in the fresh crisp air and marveling at the beautiful fall foliage. Enjoying a game of chess in what once was “Harper’s Court”, now it just a monstrosity of modern buildings that don’t blend with the aesthetic of the neighborhood. But I digress. Leather jackets, sweaters, knee high boots and Chicago football are back in play.
So Chicago in the fall, here are a few things you can get into:
1. Apple Picking for the Kiddies
Although there aren’t any orchards in the city, there are plenty on the outskirts. Many of the orchards have additional activities like petting zoos and hay rides. The season usually starts in August and ends in early November. Orchards: 1) Apple Holler, 2) County Line Orchard and 3) Kuiper’s Family Farm to name a few.
2. Corn Mazes! For the kid in us all!
Kroll’s Fall Harvest Farm: This Waukegan farm keeps it pretty simple with a pumpkin patch, petting zoo, hayrides and a corn maze. The corn maze, this year featuring a large turkey, is fun for the whole family and stroller friendly as well. Staff is available throughout the maze to help lead the way and there is even an educational portion to the adventure.
3. 52nd Chicago International Film Festival
The festival runs October 13-27, 2016. This two-week event takes place every October and is North America’s oldest competitive international film festival. It boasts a full roster of domestic and international films in every genre, with over 150 films from more than 60 different countries. Many first-time filmmakers are featured here. It attracts a host of well-known actors, directors and industry professionals. Special receptions, parties and live music performances throughout Chicago are the norm!

5. For All My Artsy, Artistic Geniuses
West Town Art Walk: Artists take over neighborhood shops during the annual West Town Art Walk, which mines the creative talents of area residents. The festival celebrates all kinds of art, including visual, fashion, musical and culinary. The event is being held in conjunction with the West Town Food Truck Social, which features Chicago's best food trucks serving up four-wheeled delicacies from lobster rolls to jerk chicken to pierogi. It’s happening September 30-Oct. 1, 2016! This is perfect for me because I will be home!
There are so many other activities going on that I could not list them all (i.e. Museum Week, the International Music festival, Oktoberfest, etc)! Here are a couple sites that have a host of things to do this fall in the Chi! www.events12.com or www.timeout.com
Enjoy the Journey,
