“A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.”- Mahatma Gandhi
You probably can’t tell (Mother Nature is a bit erratic right now) but summer is upon us! And you know what that means….”Festival Season” is coming! Growing up in the “summertime Chi” was great because I was exposed to a host of cultural experiences without ever leaving the city. So if a vacation or international travel is not in the budget this summer, check out your city’s event page.
Here in DC, street festivals are already underway. In April, I stumbled onto the Japanese Street festival which was nothing I had ever encountered before. It was a unique experience. “The Sakura Matsuri - Japanese Street Festival is the largest one-day celebration of Japanese culture in the United States and is the grand finale of the National Cherry Blossom Festival in the district. Vendors and performers from all over the U.S come to share their love and excitement for Japanese culture.” For a brief moment I was able to immerse myself into the Japanese experience. Many of the attendees were dressed in Japanese street fashion (very cool), vendors selling various items that represent the culture and performers sharing their passion of the Japanese arts. It’s a festival not to be missed, for more information visit, www.sakuramatsuri.org.
If you will be in DC this summer, here are a few more fest worth checking out”:
Now, this year was my first time hearing about this and I don’t usually eat from food trucks, but why not? You only live once! Truckeroo is a monthly showcase of Washington, D.C.’s local food trucks, bringing everyone's “flavor-ites” together one Friday each month from April to September. A diverse sampling of foods and flavors are presented at this festival, and there’s live music and games throughout the day. It’s located at the Fairgrounds DC, 1299 Half St SE Washington, DC 20003, 11am-11pm. From my understanding, it’s an experience, so I’ll be at the next one! More info www.fairgroundsdc.com

CARIBBEAN WINE, MUSIC & ART FESTIVAL
So this fest, by far is one of my favorite events to attend! I pretty much go every year! Memorial Day weekend, it’s going down! I love Caribbean music, I looooove wine, I love good food, I love being out in the sun and just having a good time with friends. This festival gives me all of that. It’s about a 45min drive from DC to the beautiful and peaceful country side of Mount Airy Maryland at Linganore Winecellars.
“While the steel drum band plays and the reggae beats fill the air, sip Linganore wines and enjoy the mellow vibes. There will be wine sampling and tours and wonderful vendors with art, crafts and great food.” It’s a two day event so bring, tent, some chairs or a blanket and just chill. For more info www.linganorewines.com.
DC JAZZ FESTIVAL
“The fastest growing jazz festival in the U.S., the DC Jazz Festival®, celebrates its 10th Anniversary with an all-star lineup performing in exceptional venues across the nation’s capital. New this year is a three-day outdoor "blowout" finale, The DC Jazz Festival and Events DC Present: Jazz at the Capitol Riverfront.”
Another fest I have yet to attend but, I will be there this year! It runs June 10-19th and tickets are on sale now! The lineup is extensive for this ten day event, there so many performers, I refuse to list them all! Go to the website! Lol www.dcjazzfest.org.
If I didn’t give you enough to do in DC, check out all the happenings coming to DC this summer at www.washington.org. So tell me something, If I were coming to your city next, what festivals should I check out? Let me know!
