Growing up, I had no desire to wear makeup. I was a freshman in highschool, and my idea of makeup was a Wet-n-Wild Chocolate Lip Pencil and Carmax (don't judge me.) Even now, I am such a minimalist with my makeup routine that you would have no clue how long i have been in the beauty industry just by looking at my personal makeup! I wear foundation, bronzer, blush, brows and mascara... Oh, and of course my red lip. This sounds like a makeup newbie's starter kit! With the evolution of makeup in social media, parent's rules and peer pressure, who really determines when kids start wearing makeup?
Makeup In Social Media
As many of you may know, my dear darling 6 year old, Reese, LOVES Kids YouTube! She even has a few videos up and would like her own channel! I think she is pretty darn good... but I am her mother and of course I am bias! With her love for Kids YouTube, I have seen it all! From toy hauls to what seems to be "reality show-like" episodes, Kids YouTube has it all. Surprisingly enough, there are even makeup tutorials to look like your favorite Princess! I was blown away! And of course Reese has requested to try many of these looks out. Do I say yes since it can be seen as a former of Art and self expression, or is 6 still too young?
I have worked in retail cosmetics since 2004. With that said, you can imagine that I have seen it all! With reference to kids, there have been parents who are shopping for 8 year old's their 1stmakeup products to parents who drop their kids off at Sephora for hours on end and they leave the store looking like drag queens with what appears to be a full on mani/pedi! Am I silly for thinking this is bazaar? As a parent, there are limits that I create for my daughters, and as my girls age there will be certain things that I will consider.
1. What items are being purchased?
2. Why are you wanting to purchase them?
3. Does this makeup item make you look out of your age range?
8 years old is way too young for makeup, or is a red lip too young for a 14 year old even if it's the trend?
Maybe I'm from the old school, but I remember when we couldn't even wear nail Polish. The most common age I hear girls wearing makeup in school is 12. Mascara and lip gloss is where it starts. Are the schools letting 6th graders these days wear makeup? And if they are, how are they addressing the issue of when it becomes too much?
I really want to hear from you. What are your thoughts? When is it appropriate for kids to wear makeup?
