All too often we struggle with what to wear. What to wear to work? To dinner with friends? On a date with the boo? And so on and so forth. Before kids, I had the luxury of copious amounts of unfulfilled time to ponder these things. Now, I'm lucky if I can pee uninterrupted. Ahhh…. The good ol’ days of not having a little person barge in on you while you are trying to relieve your bladder. Any ways, we all want to look nice and feel confident about how we are killing the game. Yet, we often end up looking like everybody else because we did not take the time to layer on the umph that makes you stand out. If you are between the ages of “I can buy likkah (liquor)” and “I have not experienced age induced cold sweats yet” then this will help you skyrocket your look. Well, maybe not skyrocket, but it will definitely turn it up a notch or two. How do you layer on the umph, you say? Well damnnnnn Gina, give me a minute I am about to tell you. Sheesh!
These are the 3 things I do when pulling my outfit together:
1. Understand what look I am trying to achieve.
Am I going for sexy, sporty, bohemian, etc..? Defining that will assist in knowing what pieces to select to achieve the look. For example, if I’m going for sexy, IWILL NOT and CAN NOT wear a damn kitten heel! My feet will retract like a turtle’s head if I try to put them on. It’s kind of an unknown gift I was blessed with - jealous?
2. Keep it simple.
One of the most frustrating things about life is seeing someone with a killer outfit and ALL of their accessories on. I mean everything got.damn.thing they own. Like whyyyyy, fam? Less is more. For real. You do not need the statement necklace, the big earrings, 13 bracelets, 21 midi rings, a tote bag, a headband, and the big face watch. You don’t. I promise you don't.
3. Pull out your secret weapon.
And blow they ass up bro! The secret weapon is your hair. It adds the finishing touch to an outfit that can fuck up any onlookers understanding of life. Why would you want them understanding life instead of understanding how much you are shutting it down? I mean, come on now!
Check out how I added the umph to an outfit I wore this weekend. I wanted my hair and shoes to be the standout pieces while wearing a fitted black midi dress. This dress will be in rotation for some other looks so I decided to drop a couple of style boards below to help generate other ideas on how you can wear this simple LBD (little black dress). Tell me how you take your look to the next level. We all want to know (so we can steal your ideas).
